Fee for Service Model

I maintain a self-pay practice. This means you and I determine your length in treatment, the focus of treatment, and the treatment approach used. I charge $100.00 per 55-minute session. Many clients are able to use money from their FSA or HSA to pay for mental health counseling. Check with your FSA/HSA manager to understand which medical services are eligible under your plan.  I am also happy to provide a superbill (a specific kind of receipt) which you can submit to your insurance carrier. Some insurance carriers offer partial reimbursements to you for the care you have paid for out of pocket.  I am happy to answer any questions you have about this process.

You might ask "why not accept insurance?"

I don't accept insurance for a few reasons. First, insurance carriers impose restrictions on when and how they will reimburse for mental health treatment. Their policies are not reflective of best practices for clients or for the professionals they contract with. Insurance carriers aren't compelled to adhere to a professional code of ethics. This means they can, and do, refuse to cover the costs of your care if your symptoms worsen and your need additional (sometimes more costly) intervention.  The health insurance model pits your care against the insurance carrier's desire to make money. This de-prioritizes your mental health in service of increasing profits and interferes with the best practices mental health treatment has to offer you. Many insurance carriers also do not reimburse therapists in a timely manner, causing additional anxiety for the client who could ultimately find themselves facing a large bill and puts a business at risk. This damages both the integrity of the business and, if the business goes bankrupt, increases risk for other clients who also lose access to their therapist.
